Tips for Applying
File for Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) as soon as you have left work and review what is needed to submit your claim prior to filing here:FAQ: Materntiy Leave Coverage.

Prepare to wait. Claims are reviewed in the order they are received.  If information is missing, it can take longer for your claim to be processed.

Provide confirmation of your weekly benefit rate to your employer or leave and claims administrator.  If your company works with Parento, also provide a copy to your Parento Leave Administrator.

Your company may choose not to pay you paid parental leave while you’re waiting for TDI benefit confirmation. While you may be eligible for parental leave pay, you may see a delay.  If you have concerns, reach out to your company.
Who should apply?
Only birthing parents should apply. Temporary Disability Insurance is not available for non-birthing parents (e.g. dads), adoptive parents, or foster parents.
How much time is available?
TDI offers approximately 10-12 weeks of benefits while you are unable to work due to pregnancy disability. Generally, benefits are payable up to 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after your expected due date. Once your doctor verifies delivery date, you are eligible for TDI when your doctor or healthcare provider certifies you are no longer able to work.
How much of my pay does TDI cover?
Approximately 85% of your average weekly wage, up to the weekly maximum benefit rate set for that calendar year. As of 2023, the weekly maximum is $1,025 per week. To learn more about calculating your TDI weekly benefit amounts, click here.
When will benefits begin?
Benefits are payable after a 7-day waiting period (i.e., “Waiting Week”), unless you are disabled for more than 22 consecutive days. If your company uses Parento and you are an eligible employee, our company will provide parental leave pay for any unpaid waiting period to the limits of the paid parental leave policy.
When am I eligible for TDI?
If your doctor certifies you are unable to work, you may file for benefits.
What to Expect
Once you have left work, file for NJ Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI).  You may file online, by mail, or by fax.  To file by mail or by fax, print an application here.  To complete your claim, your healthcare provider will need to certify the period of time you are unable to work.  If you file online, you will be provided an “Online Form ID,” which your healthcare provider can use to submit their portion of the claim.

You may begin the online application process up to 60 days prior to the start of leave; however, you must confirm your claim within 14 days from filing. Additionally, once you begin your leave, you will have another 14 days to certify and file your claim. If you apply after your leave begins, you have 30 days from the first day of leave to file your application.

If your employer has a private STD policy, you will also need to file for those benefits.  Keep in mind, STD benefits are reduced by what you receive from TDI.  That means you may or may not receive benefits from STD, depending on how much you receive from TDI.  For more information, please refer to your employer’s STD policy.

Once you are no longer disabled, you may file for New Jersey Family Leave Insurance (FLI).   If you received NJ TDI, you will be mailed instructions on filing a transitional bonding claim (i.e., New Mother Bonding Notice).  For more information, please visit FAQ: Maternity Leave Coverage

If you haven’t received Temporary Disability Insurance benefits from the state, you can apply for Family Leave Insurance online or with a paper application.

Your employer will only pay the portion of your income not covered by STD, NJ TDI, NJ FLI, or any other wage replacement benefits you are eligible to receive. It is important that you file for these benefits as soon as possible to avoid delays in pay.
